Industry Trends
Franchised Intellectual Property
This means that a game company will need to buy the licensing/rights to a game e.g. EA Sports need to buy the licensing from Fifa to make Fifa games and Sony needed to buy licensing from marvel to make the new spider-man game.
Original IP
This means that a game publisher e.g. Microsoft makes a completely new game series with new characters and no one else can copy it or they will get done for copyright infringement. It will be a lot harder to get an audience for these kind of games as there won't be a audience already their as it's first in a potentially new series
Sequels and Spin-Off Titles
These are for games that sell really well and they will make sequels for them e.g. Call of Duty and Forza Horizon. So they will release a sequel if the game sells really well because people obviously liked the game so the series will have a good fan base and they will make a lot of money.
Discount Sales
These are games that will go on sale and they will try and make more people buy them as they will cost less when there in the sale. So a game can be about 30% of the actual price and some game developers will sell their games for free so a lot of people will buy them but they will include some DLC in these games that you will have to pay for so they aren't losing money necessarily.
Subscription Service/"Live Services"
Live Services is when a game company like Microsoft and Sony will make a game and they will try and keep releasing new stuff on it so the game last's for a long time and they don't have to keep releasing new games as the other one is still lasting.
Outsourcing
This is when other companies re-master/re-release a game that wasn't theirs originally with permission from previous owner.
Mergers and Acquisitions of Studios
This is when a game producer like Microsoft will buy some game studios and now own them e.g. at the new e3 Microsoft announced that they are now owning five studios. Mergers is when a publisher buys a game and its franchise that wasn't originally owned by them.
Micro Transactions and DLC
Micro transactions and dlc are getting more popular in recent years and they are basically add-ons for the game which you have to pay for e.g. in call of duty games you can buy extra multi-player maps to play online in.
Loot Boxes
Loot boxes are boxes in some games that you can buy to try and get something good/rare out of it and a lot of people will gamble on these and pay a lot of money on them and just waste money as you will probably pay hundreds of pounds before you actually pull something rare from it.
